We Demand Gender Neutral Bathrooms

CalArts QAC demands permanent gender-neutral bathrooms for a safe, inclusive CalArts campus and community. To create a discussion about the need to desegregated our bathrooms, we are displaying an alternative to gendered signage: posters with a check/number list of the amenities within the bathroom. If it has what you need, use it!

WHY?
All students have the right to pee/poo without difficulty, fear, shame or the possibility of physical or emotional violence – regardless of race, ethnicity, physical disability, sex, gender identity, gender presentation, sexual preferences, etc. As a public space for private needs, the bathroom is an incredibly vulnerable space to be in.

Gender-segregated bathrooms define, in very clear terms, who is allowed and who is not allowed to enter – creating a dangerous space for those who do not identify or present themselves within the gender binary (man/woman). As long as there is racism, ableism, homophobia and transphobia, we must make sure all spaces – and in particular, the vulnerable spaces of bathrooms – are safe, inclusive and accessible for all.

CalArts students, administrators and faculty must stand together as a community to make certain that we are, indeed, a community – of acceptance, safety, accessibility and compassion.

11.22.11 Update

Hi there QACers!

Things have been a little crazy on my end, but we have a few projects in the work if anyone is interested in leading or organizing:

Gender-neutral bathrooms & pee-pee dance party:
QAC and fellow CalArts students have been working for the past two years to establish permanent gender-neutral bathrooms. Vidisha and I have come up with an idea to get the discussion going again: simple, formal posters that list the available amenities in each facility (ie. # of sinks, toilets, urinals, baby-changing tables, etc) AND cover the gendered signs. Basically, the choice of bathroom is based on practicality. We were also planning a bathroom dance party for some genderfucking fun.

Performances:
You know you have some ideas. It's time QAC did some public performances, on and off campus. A couple of ideas from previous happenings:
-New Years Eve Kiss - choose a date and time, bring confetti and Auld Lange Syne on a ghetto blaster, count down and make-out with whoever
-Giant-Handed PDA - some queer couples (or triples or quadruples) walk around holding hands, but with giant, stuffed, interlaced hands!

Queer Mondays @ Highways Performance Space - Nov 28, 7:30p
Let's organize a carpool. It can also be a pre-celebration for my birthday (Nov 30th), hahaha.

Hmmm? Anyone interested in any of these?

Also, the meeting is postponed till next week, since it seems many people are out of town already or having stress tunnel vision.

Let's spend Today (Sun) amidst the lingering smells of Halloween party: beer, vomit and the naked drummers' ball and vag sweat.

QAC Group Show Installation is TODAY!

Please come by and install some work. Tell your friends.
This show is uncurated and open to all lgbtq and lgbtq-friendly folk.

QAC 10.1.11

QAC Update: October 1, 2001

Hey there QACers!
Our first meeting was a fancy success. It was lovely gathering together around free pizza (haha), so please come by for the next meeting. We'll be finalizing plans for Coming Out Day and the QAC Art Show, as well as planning escapes from Valencia to LA.

1) National Coming Out of a Prop Door Day - w/movie screening and FREE HUGS! - Oct 11

2) QAC Group Show - Oct 29-Nov 5

3) Trips to LA in a Motherfuckin' Spaceship - TBA

4) HELP! w/flyers, posts, meetings, events

Weekly Meetings: Tues 12noon in Tatum

<Questions or request will be colored PURPLE!>

****

1) National Coming Out Day - Tues Oct 11
-Prop Door?

We are setting up a photo booth and prop door to "come out" of. We'll decorate the sweet-baby-Jesus out of it, so it explodes brains. We can also talk about the notion of "coming out" (where are we coming out of? what are the assumptions implicit in the act of coming out) and discuss the complexities of our individual experiences (for some, it's not easy or even an option to - for others, they never even needed to)

-Movie Screening?
We'll also be screening a film in the Main Gallery during the evening.
Would we prefer to do it Tuesday night or Thursday night?

Any ideas for films?
Some that I can think of are:

-Milk

-John Waters-anything

-George Kuchar-anything

-Almodovar's Law of Desire

-Francois Ozon's Sitcom

-Dolly Parton's Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
-TransAmerica
(because of our lack of funds, we won't be able to invite Chris Vargas and Greg Youmans)

-Hugs?
Also, a wondrous idea from Vidisha, we'll offer free hugs on campus. How sweet! Anyone want to volunteer some arms?

2) QAC Show! Oct 29 - Nov 5

We need to start sending out the call for submissions and posters. We will include a brief description of the show, which will include some of the ideas and concerns that we discussed during our last meeting (what does it mean to put your work in a "queer" art show, what does "queer art" mean). I'll have a draft and we can edit and finalize it together. Please bring ideas for the QAC show to the next meeting! It's coming up fast. Just the way I like it.

3) Los Angeles Spaceship Trips
Even as an informal event, let's schedule some trips into LA in Scott's spaceship (8-seater mini-van). Some places/events in mind:

-Highways Performance Space: http://highwaysperformance.org/

-Oct 15 - Cruising the Archive @ One Archives -  http://cruisingthearchive.org/exhibition/

-Oct 16 - Ugly Feelings @ Redcat (w/CalArts faculty Maggie Nelson, Jack Halberstam & Wayne Koestenbaum) - http://www.redcat.org/event/ugly-feelings
-Any Saturday - Midnight Rocky Horror Picture Show @ Nuart
-Oil Can Harry's - a legitimate 70's queer disco - http://www.oilcanharrysla.com/
-Dec 17 - Bent Drag King Show @ TBA -http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bent/165426663939

4) Help!
Now that we have a core group, is anyone interested in collaborating on some QAC duties? Posters, flyers, email blasts, blog posts, running meetings, planning and running events? As a collective, we'll work together to make this a damn good time!

Remember! Weekly Meetings: Tues 12noon @ Tatum!
We can also discuss location: should we keep it in Tatum or move it elsewhere (ie. Scott's opium den studio?)

2) First Meeting and FREE PIZZA!: need I say more.

3) October 11: National Coming Out Day - Chris Vargas Screening

4) Upcoming QAC Group Show: prepare.

1) Intro:
CalArts Queer Arts Collective (QAC) is a fancy collection of artists from all mediums and schools of CalArts, creating work, ideas and community. While we're clearly a queer-centered collective (or LGBTIQQSSA or ABCDEFG or whatever floats your boat), we invite all queer-friendly and friendly-in-general folk to take part in this safe community.

2) Meetings:
Our first meeting (with FREE PIZZA) for the year is
Tuesday, Sept 27 - 12noon in Tatum Cafe
And meetings will continue every Tuesday until the end of time and space as we know it. We will be introducing, making friends and possible discussing the following two items:

3) National Coming Out Day: Oct 11 - Chris Vargas Screening
We should start planning as soon as we can. We are already in talks of screening Chris Vargas and Greg Youman's queer/trans video sitcom. Check it out: http://www.fallinginlovewithchrisandgreg.com/

4) QAC Show:
Our annual QAC Group Show is coming up! It usually takes place around Halloween in late October-early November. We can talk about it on a political and conceptual level (what does it mean to have a queer art show, what does it mean to self-identify as a queer artist, should it be curated, etc) and on a silly level (opening reception food?). ¡Que fancy!
